so several years ago I spent a summer working at a beach resort and I worked with this girl and we were talking about independence day, and she asked if it was celebrated in the UK. I asked if she knew what the fourth of july actually commemorated and she shook her head no, so I explained to her that it was when America, formerly a British colony, filed for divorce from the UK and started a war for independence. Her response? “Well, why wouldn’t they celebrate that?!”

So I just finished The Fault In Our Stars and I would just like to say that as someone who has done time in the trenches with online dating, Augustus’ dialogue really squicked me out for one reason: He sounded like tons of the overly thesaurus-reliant messages that filled my inbox on OKC. 

To all the young women out there, LFMF: 7-8 times out of ten, if a dude is sending you messages that sound like Trying Too Hard™ Augustus Waters, he is not going to turn out to be the cinnamon roll Augustus Waters was. Most of the time, it’s a signal to run, because they either have nothing meaningful to say, or they’re hoping you won’t realise what they’re actually saying.

Fola Orebiyi was stabbed to death in London by a ‘gang of youths on bikes’. 

Naturally, all the commentary on this has been about the tragedy of gang violence. 

Hands up if you think this had less to do with gang warfare and more to do with Brexit legitimising violent xenophobia
