Old Norse/ Icelandic – The Modern Icelandic Method
It can seem a bit odd, since many things are pronounced as different letters and sounds completely, but I do like the idea of keeping things fluid and alive in the modern version of the language. I suggest practicing these by saying the words aloud multiple times, especially when translating or reading many words together.
For those of you interesting in the reconstructed Old Icelandic Method, see my other post at thislink. Also, for more on Old Norse, see my tab ‘Learn Old Norse’. Not everything is there, but more is added as I learn the language myself. Also, an even better source than I am would be the book itself (see ‘Source’ below).
Hope this is helpful for some of you! I will be studying this a bit myself when I find some more time.

i was about to joke about how my political stance is “end lawnmower culture” but then it occurred to me that i actually Am against lawns as suburban status symbols and wastes of land that Could be used to sustain native flora & fauna and grow food for people, but no, instead they are these huge useless swaths of land that need Constant maintenance, the process of which is not only destructive, but Incredibly Loud
You know that actually is the purpose of a lawn? They started as a trend of the French monarchy – the ones revolutionaries beheaded for being self indulgent assholes.
It exists purely as a status symbol that says, “I have land but I don’t have to use it for anything productive. I can invest time, money and resources in maintaining an entirely useless crop on land I’m not farming just because it looks pretty.”
Lawns offend me.
Why have that stunted golf course in front of your suburban house if you can’t even water it? Get one of these instead.
Unite Against the Lawn
Pro tiny house, anti grass lawn. Prioritize practicality.
This is actually really interesting because back in the 1950s and 60s in Australia when we started getting large waves of Southern European migrants one thing the Italians and others would often so is buy a little suburban home, then tear out the ornamental flower beds and lawn and useless trees and plant fruits, vegetables, grapes and even olives. It was considered completely scandalous by their Anglo-Saxon neighbours because lawn was considered an aspirational thing and the ideal was to go from not needing a kitchen garden and having an ornamental garden to show how well you were doing.
This is great. All of it. Not to derail this too much, but “Lawnmower” culture also reminds me of aggressively heterosexual men. Men ALWAYS will use mowing the lawn as a way to get out of doing all the other household chores – having a lawn that a man mows somehow makes maintaining everything else inside a house the women’s responsibility. Down with lawnmower culture.
i’ve actually read a whole book on lawns and lawn culture (yes, really) it’s called lawn people by paul robbins check it out and let’s all boycott lawn culture together!!!
Seriously, though, that’s exactly what I wanna do. That, or let it revert to a more natural state with native flora to attract small native fauna. It’s pretty and requires no extra anything because it’s what would grow there if we weren’t here. Then you can always cut it down in the fall with a scythe, or a mower if you just had to, compost the clippings, and let it do its thing again the next year.
i swear to god, men raising their voice is the most terrifying thing in the whole world. they dont understand, like its an immediate panic response, game over
I actually had no idea women found this so scary
my downstairs neighbors fight on a regular basis, and every time he starts yelling i’m a little afraid he’s going to kill her. i have no reason to think this except that he is a man and he is angry
My math teacher has a loud voice and a temper and he scares the living shit out of me almost everyday. He’s made me and other kids cry more than once and he and his teacher buddies make a joke out of terrifying students.
this was women in general? i knew my gf didn’t like it but I was unaware if this affected most women
Yes, it does
As a woman, I had no idea it effected other women like this. I was too afraid to even talk about it. I thought I was weak. Thanks for bringing attention to this.
My dad has a horrible temper and when he yells it scares me and my mother both badly. He got into such a hissy fit over one of the cats while my moms friend was over, and her friend said that it brought on her abuse PTSD. He’s horrid.
any guy comes along and gets loud, boom, instant shutdown. Lights are off, nobody’s home, ready to leave the building
Women are raised on horror stories of how dangerous the world is for us. We’re told not to ride too far on our bikes because there have been so many cases of grown men snatching little girls off the side of the road. Our mothers tell us not to wander away when we’re out shopping because someone could grab us, and if we don’t listen and go off on our own our mother’s panicked response when they find us confirms that we were in real danger. When we get a little older and start going out on our own we’re given countless lectures about how many women get attacked every year, often by people they know and are close with, to instill in us a need to be constantly vigilant about our own safety. This creates an automatic response. When a male starts getting aggressive our subconscious reminds us that we could end up a statistic, we could be the next victim that a parent will see on the news and use our story to warn their little girl about the dangers of the world. Not all men who raise their voices are going to get violent but we have no way of knowing what kind of man you really are until it’s too late. Aggressive anger causes us to panic because we’ve been trained to take that as a warning and worry that it might escalate.
All men are potential threats. A man who raises his voice or loses control of his anger confirms that he is a man we need to be afraid of.
I really like that this is a…conversation.
this blog desperately needs more original content stuff.
I’d ask you guys what sort of stuff you’d like to see but a) no one but tufty would actually respond and b) we all know that even with a gun to my head I cannot will myself into doing anything whatsoever
