so several years ago I spent a summer working at a beach resort and I worked with this girl and we were talking about independence day, and she asked if it was celebrated in the UK. I asked if she knew what the fourth of july actually commemorated and she shook her head no, so I explained to her that it was when America, formerly a British colony, filed for divorce from the UK and started a war for independence. Her response? “Well, why wouldn’t they celebrate that?!”
